Everybody has a rearview mirror in the car, as it helps the driver to see the traffic behind clearly and therefore make correct decisions while driving. We are all taught to use it to check traffic during lane changes, parking, etc. It is so vital that all cars come standardized with a rearview mirror. However, traditional rearview mirrors are limited in function and have four major flaws that a digital rearview mirror can remedy.

First, the traditional rearview mirror only reflects objects in the back. With the limited vision, the driver’s line of sight can easily be obstructed when the cargo area is packed with luggage or a tall passenger is in the backseat. On the contrary, the digital rearview mirror can deal with these situations with ease because it reflects the view from outside the car. With the rear camera installed in the back of the car, the digital rearview mirror will have nothing that will block its vision to the outside world, therefore, providing the driver with a wider and clearer view of the traffic conditions behind.

Secondly, in hand with the restricted view weakness, the traditional rearview mirror has a greater area of blindspots. Thankfully, a digital rearview mirror can greatly reduce the area of blindspots while driving. Digital rearview mirrors have at least 100° field of vision and it has a great advantage of capturing the lower area behind the car since it is placed above the license plate. The view is much lower than the traditional rearview mirror and thus can show the driver exactly where the car is backing into. Not to mention, the digital rearview mirror can be adjusted to view higher or lower, left and right with a simple swipe on the screen. Having a clearer and boarder view of behind the car has never been more convenient.

The third flaw happens during nighttime when the traditional rearview mirror reflects the blinding lights from the headlights of cars behind back at the driver’s eyes. It is extremely dangerous when the vehicles behind have their high beam lights or headlights constantly shine and reflect back at the driver through the rearview mirror. Not only can be very distracting but can also impair the driver’s sight. In this case, the traditional standard rearview mirror does not come with an auto-dimming feature to protect the driver’s eyes. In contrast, the image sensor of the digital rearview mirror will automatically filter out the strong light and ensures the best view of the traffic behind no matter how bright the vehicle lights behind are.

Fourth, the traditional rearview mirrors are heavily dependent on clean windows to deliver an optimal clear rear view of the car. With that being said, when the weather conditions outside the car becomes severe, there is nothing the driver can do to increase the clarity of their views behind their car. Rain or snow can easily collect on the rear window, blocking the rearview mirror’s visibility. Luckily, the digital rearview mirror works in all weather conditions because the camera is placed outside the car and not the inside. Thanks to the digital aspect, the camera can even filter through the fog.  The digital rearview mirror projects clear real-time footage of rear traffic in any weather. The weatherproof rear camera ensures crisp footage under all weather conditions. Being able to conquer any weather condition, the digital rearview mirror greatly increases the safety and confidence of any driver.

Last but not least, as a bonus, the digital rearview mirror not only provides the driver with a better field of view but also retains all the features of a dashboard camera. With the functionalities of a dash camera, the digital rearview mirror’s G-sensor will automatically lock and protect footages when it senses a collision. Parking mode and motion detection will protect the vehicle when it is parked by automatically recording when motion is detected. While on the road, the digital rearview mirror’s dual cameras will simultaneously record footage of the front and rear traffic, protecting the driver with a video record if an accident does occur.

Acumen digital rearview mirror challenges the definition of the traditional dashcam. It not only helps to effectively pick up and save all activities that occur while driving the car, but also expands your field of vision, ensuring your driving safety on the road.

  • Thanks to the mirror mount design, the Acumen digital rearview mirror project real-time footage on the digital screen which enables the drivers to see the backward traffic even if you stack your luggage to the roof of your car. It can also function as a backup camera to help drivers prevent back-over accidents of young children who are in the driver s blind spots and, thus, avoid tragedy from happening.
