What is GPS for dashcams?

Everybody must be familiar with GPS (Global Position System). But when mentioning GPS, people usually think of GPS navigators, such as Google Maps or Apple Maps. However, a GPS tracker in a dashcam is different from a GPS navigator because it cannot navigate, instead, it tracks the vehicle’s speed and locations.

Acumen digital rearview mirror dashcams do not include built-in GPS trackers but are compatible with most external GPS antennas. The external antennas provide GPS satellite signals to the digital rearview mirror dash cam so that the vehicle’s speed and position will be logged automatically to the memory card. When you playback the footage on your computer or smartphone, you’ll be able to see the speed and position alongside the footage.

Here’s an example of how the footage looks like after plug in an external GPS antenna:

Why is it important to install a GPS tracker in your dashcam?

Fleet owners

The GPS info can help the fleet owners to keep track of their vehicles, such as where the vehicles have been and how fast the drivers were driving. It not only helps fleet owners to manage the fleet but also reminds the drivers to always drive within the speed limit and not to abuse the vehicle for their personal use.

Parents of teens

Parents who have teens that just got their driver’s license can also use the GPS to monitor their teen’s driving behavior. Speeding is one of the most common driving violations among teenagers. A GPS that records speed can at least remind them to watch out their speed.

Drivers

GPS information can be very necessary in the case of a car accident. It can not only tell you exactly when and where the accident happened but can also show how fast you were driving. Alongside the video evidence, you will save a lot of time explaining the accident to the police officer and the insurance company. The GPS information can also prevent you from an unwanted speeding ticket. The radar gun that police officers use are not always accurate, but it’s hard for you to debate with law enforcement if you don’t have any convincing evidence.
